A historic shift in international travel begins next week as Russia and Saudi Arabia officially implement their mutual visa-exemption agreement on 11 May 2026. First signed in Riyadh in December 2025, the pact allows citizens from both nations to travel between the two countries for up to 90 days per calendar year without a visa.

What the New Agreement Covers
The exemption applies to holders of all passport types - ordinary, diplomatic, special and streamlines entry for several short-term purposes:
Tourism: Spontaneous travel to explore cultural landmarks from Moscow's Red Square to Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast.
Business: Short-term business trips and professional meetings.
Family Visits: Simplified process for visiting friends and relatives.
Note on Limitations: The visa-free stay of 90 days can be used either in one continuous visit or spread across multiple trips throughout the year. However, it does not cover work, academic study, long-term residency, or travel for the Hajj pilgrimage, all of which still require specific visas.
Important Restrictions to Keep in Mind
While the visa-free travel agreement is a significant step forward, it does not cover all types of travel. Visitors still need to apply for a visa in certain cases:
Employment or Long-term Residency
Working or moving permanently to the other country requires specific permits beyond the visa waiver.
Studies
Students must obtain an educational visa to enroll in schools or universities.
Religious Pilgrimage
Travel specifically for Hajj or Umrah during the Hajj season requires a dedicated visa.
Travellers planning these activities should prepare accordingly and apply for the appropriate visa in advance.
