If you're based in the UK and need to travel to Nigeria, whether to visit family, attend a business meeting, or take up employment, you'll need to apply for a Nigeria visa before you travel. Unlike some destinations, Nigeria does not offer visa on arrival for British or most other passport holders applying from the UK.

This guide covers everything you need to know about applying for a Nigeria visa from the UK in 2026, including which visa type you need, what documents are required, how long it takes, and how much it costs.

Do I Need a Nigeria Visa if I Have a British Passport?

Yes. British passport holders require a visa to enter Nigeria. The visa must be obtained before travel, you cannot get one on arrival. All applications from UK residents are processed through the Nigerian High Commission in London via the Visa Application Centre.

If you hold a Nigerian passport alongside your British passport, the rules are different, dual nationals should check current requirements directly with the High Commission.

Types of Nigeria Visa Available from the UK

There are three main visa types available for UK-based applicants:

Tourist Visa - for leisure travel, visiting family, or sightseeing in Nigeria. Valid for single or multiple entry depending on what is granted.

Business Visa - for attending meetings, conferences, trade events, or conducting business activities in Nigeria. Requires documentation from your employer and in most cases from a Nigerian business contact or sponsor.

Temporary Work Visa  - for short-term assignments in Nigeria, typically for up to 90 days. This visa is commonly used by engineers, technicians, consultants, trainers, and specialists carrying out temporary project work. Applicants generally require sponsorship from a Nigerian company, a formal invitation or employment letter, and approval from the Nigerian Immigration Service. The sponsoring organisation must also accept Immigration Responsibility.

What Documents Do You Need for a Nigeria Visa from the UK?

The exact documents required vary depending on your visa type, but all applicants need:

  • A valid passport with at least six months' validity from your intended date of entry, and at least two blank pages

  • Two recent passport-sized photographs (taken within the last six months)

  • A completed and signed Nigeria visa application form

  • Proof of UK residence (for non-British nationals)

  • Bank statements showing sufficient funds for your trip

For a business visa, you'll also need an employer letter on company letterhead, addressed directly to the Nigerian High Commission, and an invitation letter from your Nigerian business contact or sponsoring organisation.

For a Temporary Work Visa (TWP), you'll generally need an invitation letter from the sponsoring company in Nigeria, evidence of the temporary assignment or project, and supporting immigration documentation issued or approved by the Nigerian Immigration Service. The sponsoring organisation must also accept Immigration Responsibility for the applicant during their stay in Nigeria.

One detail that catches many applicants out: all letters must be formally addressed to the Nigerian High Commission in London. A generic letter that isn't specifically addressed will be rejected.

How Long Does a Nigeria Visa Take from the UK?

Processing times for a Nigeria visa can vary depending on the visa category, application volume, and whether additional checks are required. Many applications are processed within a few working days after biometrics, but delays can occur.

Most applicants are required to attend a biometric appointment in person at the Visa Application Centre in London. Exceptions may apply to children under five years of age and holders of diplomatic passports.

As processing times are not guaranteed, we recommend applying at least 4 to 6 weeks before your intended travel date. This allows sufficient time for document preparation, biometrics, and any unforeseen delays.

How Much Does a Nigeria Visa Cost?

There are two types of fees involved in a Nigeria visa application:

Government fees - these are set by the Nigerian authorities and vary depending on the applicant's nationality, visa category, and length of stay. In addition to the visa fee itself, applicants may also be required to pay Visa Application Centre and administrative fees. As these charges are subject to change, we recommend checking the latest fees before submitting an application.

Service fees - if you use a visa assistance service like Allvisa, a separate service fee covers document checking, application preparation, and submission guidance. This is always disclosed before you commit.

Common Reasons Nigeria Visa Applications Are Rejected

The Nigerian High Commission has strict standards and will reject applications that don't meet them. The most common reasons for rejection include:

  • Missing or incorrectly formatted documents

  • Letters not addressed to the Nigerian High Commission

  • Bank statements not meeting the minimum balance requirement

  • Photographs not meeting the official size and format standards

  • Application forms with errors or missing information

Having your documents professionally checked before submission significantly reduces the risk of rejection, which is exactly what Allvisa does for every client.
